On May 23, 24 and 25 of 1912, members of the Southeast Missouri Drummers’ Association held their annual convention at Farmington. Drummers were salesmen who traveled from town to town selling their wares. Drummers such as these can be seen in the Broadway show “The Music Man,” whose main character, Professor Harold Hill, sold musical instruments.
In preparation for that convention, the organization published an impressive booklet that included a history of Farmington, complete with photographs of city leaders, professional buildings, homes, advertisements, and caricatures of some of the organization’s members. We have reproduced parts of that booklet, found in our funeral home archives, in this section of our web site. It offers a unique pre-World War I view of our city.
